Olympics quilt (107)

Well, the Olympics are over for now. What an excellent job the Chinese did, and the opening and closing ceremonies were both terrific. I have no fears though for London in four years time, I have no doubt that we can put on an equally stunning show, though hopefully different and less expensive. I thought London's 8 minute segment was great today - quirky, young, polished and witty. The party in The Mall which went on straight afterwards was televised by the BBC and was good fun too. Poor Michael Phelps seemed totally overwhelmed by the number of people there and the welcome they gave him. Good to have him here though.

And my quilt is done too. I started it during the Opening Ceremony and put the last stitches in just as the Closing Ceremony ended! It was an Anni Downs, of Hatched and Patched, pattern - her Simple Pleasures quilt. Of course, I didn't notice until I hung it up and stood back from it that loads of the stitcheries were on wonky! It was just the same when I was putting up displays at school, they looked absolutely straight when I was close to them, but when I stood back I always found they were on a slant. I think it's something to do with my astigmatism. So, do I unpick them and have another go, or see if I can live with it?

I can't believe you finished an entire quilt during the Olympics. It looks great! I wouldn't worry so much about the "wonkyness". Of course it depends on whether it is for the wall or to use, and if it is going to be washed or not. After it gets used a bit and washed it will look just fine, of course if it is hanging on a wall unwashed, it might make a difference....
Our closing ceremonies are on tonight, it must be a time delay. I'm going to record it for the kids this time, they have really enjoyed parts of it.

try living with it, if they bother you, unpick the straighter ones and make them purposely wonky.... :-)

I would leave them. It's a charming quilt - you were probably paying attention to the sporting event at hand - so you can look at it and remember all those exciting olympic moments.

If it were me I would redo the little squares and square them up. But you can say this quilt has the "patched look" and was designed to have crooked patches...which is true.

Love the color combination in it.

Have a great week.

I'd leave them just as they are that makes your quilt one of a kind. I like it looks fun and easy.

I think it looks wonderful; what a feat to accomplish during the Olympics.

I am awed that you finished a whole quilt so quickly. Did you do all the stitcheries during the olympics, too? I think it looks wonderful, and I agree that if you are hanging it you may for your own perfectionism want to straighten one or two, but if it is going to be for relaxing on the couch, I like it just the way it is. I think it gives it extra charm.

I'd leave them as they are. If anyone queries them just say it's a design feature.

Love and hugs Gina xxxx

Please don't pick those out and do them over. It looks fantastic as is.
How fantastic for you to have the next summer Olympics right "down the road" in London! I had that experience in '96 when it was in Atlanta - only an hour's drive for me. We attended several events and I am so glad we did.

Oh WOW! What a great memory of the 2008 Olympics----just think---every time you look at it, you won't be able to HELP but to think of these past two weeks.

Wow, an Olympic quilt! My guess is that this will be a very memorable quilt for you. Every time you look at it, you will have fond memories of the Chinese hosted olympics. I am amazed that you were able to accomplish so much in such a little time. Good job!
Take care.
Aloha!

P.S. I don't think it looks wonky at all!

I love your quilt! As far as redoing the blocks, it is totally up to you. If you like it that way then leave it, if it bugs you then fix it. You may be the only one that notices the blocks aren't straigt. :D Stop by my blog and sign up for my give-away. I have missed your blog being on vacation without a computer!

Your quilt is lovely, Amanda. Very nice way to spend the Olympics.

It looks great! I wouldn't worry about unpicking the stitcheries, something like that adds uniqueness to a quilt/project.
Well done to have accomplished it over the olympics, I still haven't sat down to stitch and watch; *chuckle* and the olympics is over now! Next time!

Hey, you timed that right on making the quilt. Start and finish with the Olympics. Good job!
Michael Phelps seemed to make it look so easy. Bet everyone is wearing those Speedos next Olympics.

I say leave the wonky stitcheries as they are! It's a beautiful quilt and the wonky bits make it that much more special in my opinion!

That is amazing that you got that done in what... 17 days? What self discipline!!! No, don't start picking that apart. Here again, if you hadn't mentioned it I doubt that anyone would have noticed the wonkiness.
